Animal Protective Services

On Thursday, May 25, 2023, the board members of the Robeson County Health Department unanimously approved the transfer of the entire Animal Control Division to the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.

Effective July 1, 2023, the division began operating under its new name, Robeson County Animal Protective Services, with the exception of rabies shot distribution, which remains under the Health Department’s oversight.

Led by the Animal Protective Services Supervisor and a team of dedicated officers, the division is responsible for picking up stray animals and collaborating with the Animal Shelter to promote pet adoptions, rabies vaccinations, and spay/neuter programs.

In November 2024 RCAPS passed state inspection for first time in over a decade. This is what Sheriff Wilkins had to say:

“We are thrilled to receive this recognition. The shelter has had a history of routinely failing inspections for over a decade. Since our office began operating the shelter as of July of last year, our team has worked tirelessly to ensure that our shelter provides a safe and nurturing environment for all the animals in our care. Hiring new full-time personnel, adding more part-time and volunteer staff, training and receiving public support was critical in achieving this passing inspection. This inspection result is a great validation of the efforts of all.”
